Cypress is an unincorporated community in Harris County, Texas, United States, located completely inside the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Houston. The Cypress area is located along U.S. Highway 290 (Northwest Freeway) is twenty-four miles (35 km) northwest of Downtown Houston. Large scale residential and commercial development beginning in the 1980s transformed the once rural area into one of the Houston area's largest suburban communities. General Sam Houston and his Texas Army camped in the area on March 22, 1836 on the way to Harrisburg, which is now in East Houston, just days before the Battle of San Jacinto. History
Cypress is a suburb of Houston, Texas. The area was once home to the Atakapa and Akokisa Indian tribes. German settlers came to the area in the 1840s. General Sam Houston camped in the area on March 22, 1836. The Cypress Historical Society was formed in March 2008. The CHS organization holds regular events aimed at exposing Cypress' residents to the historical and cultural foundation upon which the area was built. In the early 1990s, developers began construction of several master-planned communities in Cypress. The first community was built in the 1990s and is known as Cypress Village, which is located on Cypress Creek. The community is home to a number of museums, including the Texas Museum of Natural History and the Houston Museum of Science and Culture, which was founded in 1894. The city is also the site of the Texas State Museum, which dates back to the 17th century. It is located at the intersection of Cypress creek and the Brazos River, which runs through the center of the city. In 2010, Sysco announced that it would establish a shared services facility for its distribution centers in North America. The facility would be located along U.S. Highway 290 in Cypress, California. The center will be located on the former Hewlett Packard call center site. It is expected to be completed by the end of the year. It will be the first of its kind in the United States, and the second of its type in the world. The company's other centers are located in California, Texas and New Mexico. It plans to expand the center to other parts of North America in the future, including the Caribbean and South America. It also plans to open a distribution center in South Africa in the near future, which would be the company's second North American center of operations after the Cypress facility. It has been in the works for more than a decade, but only recently announced plans to move it to Cypress. In the past year, the company has been working on a third location in South Carolina, which it will open in 2015. LSC-Cyfair Library, a partner effort between HCPL and Lone Star college System, is located at 9191 Barker-Cypresses Road on the CollegeCy Fair campus. LCC-CyFair is part of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District, which joined the community college district in 2000. The territory of Cypress- Fairbanks ISD was added to the Texas Community College System in 2007. The district has a population of nearly 107,000 as of 2010. The Cypress ISD high school students attend Cy-Fair High School and Cypress Lakes High School. Windfern High School offers an alternative path toward graduation for accepted students from the above high school attendance zones.
