The name Stow is now used to refer to a small lake, known as Silver Lake since 1874, that was known earlier as Wetmore Pond or Stow Lake. It is also known as "Stow Lake" or "Wetmore Lake" due to its location near the Seneca tribe of Seneca Native Americans who lived in the area before European settlers arrived in the early 1800s. The current name of the lake is in honor of William Wetmore, a settler also from Middletown, Connecticut, who moved to Stow in 1804 with his family and several other settlers.
