Northport is a historic maritime village on the northern shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Initially designated Great Cow Harbour by 17th-century English colonists, the area was officially renamed Northport in 1837. In 1894, in an effort to localize governance, the community was incorporated as a village. As of 2010, the village has a population of approximately 7,401 and is served by the Northport-East Northport School District. Northport is known for its Victorian era village center, still bearing trolley rails from a long since discontinued streetcar line. The village Main Street runs from the Village Green along the harbor-front to the former hamlet of Vernon Valley, which has since been subsumed by the neighboring community of East Northport. The oldest house still standing in Northport, the Skidmore House on Main Street, was built in 1761. In 2009 the house was put up for sale, sparking the village to pass a historical preservation law. In the early 19th century, Great Cow Harbor was still a rural farming community. The 1860 census listed Northport's population at 1,016. By 1874, it had become the most flourishing village on Suffolk County's north shore, with three ship yards, five sets of marine railways, two hotels, and at least six general stores. The shipbuilding boom lasted fifty years, but waned at the end of the century as steel-hulled ships began replacing the wooden vessels produced in the village.
History
Northport is the primary city name, but also Fort Salonga are acceptable city names or spellings, Asharoken, Crab Meadow, Eatons Neck, Sunken Meadow on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Northport is a village on Long Island, New York. It was founded in 1656 by the Matinecocks, one of the 13 Native American tribes of Long Island. The oldest house still standing in Northport, the Skidmore House on Main Street, was built in 1761. Northport was not formally incorporated until 1894, becoming the first village in the Town of Huntington to do so. In 1967, the Northport Power Company opened the largest electric-fired station on the island, which is currently the largest power station in the U.S. The village is home to the Long Island Rail Road, which opened on April 25, 1868, and the New York and Long Island Railroad, which closed on August 19, 1924. It is also the home of Northport Memorial Park, a public park which is a defining feature of the village. The park is located at 40.9995°N 73.3296°W / 40.8995°W; -73.3295°W. (The nearby hamlet of Centerport was known as Little Cow Harbour.) Northport is also home to Crab Meadow, an independent settlement of parts of the community of Crab Meadow (also known as Fresh Hook), as well as western parts of western Northport. The town of Huntington is located on the other side of the harbor, and is the largest city in Suffolk County, with a population of 2.4 million. North port is located in the northern part of the Long island Peninsula, which was once known as the East End of the East Coast.
Geography
Northport is located at 40°5410N 73°2039W (40.902803, -73.344069) According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²) Most of the village is made up of the low, steep hills of Long Island's northern terminal moraine. A prominent feature of Northport is Steer's Pit (known simply as "The Pit" to locals) This unusual geographic feature is the result of sand mining operations by the Steers and Steers Company. Mining began in 1923 and ceased in the 1950s. The mined sand was shipped by barge to New York City where, mixed with Portland cement and rock aggregate, it became the sidewalks of New York. The area has since been utilized for home and condo use, and a portion of the Pit is a park used by local youth soccer and baseball leagues. The Northport Fire Department maintains a training facility in the Pit that is the site of the annual fireman's fair in the summer. The village is located on Long Island, New York, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The city of N.Y. is in the state of Connecticut, and the town of Nantucket is in New Hampshire. Northport has a population of 2,816. It is located in the eastern part of the Long Island Peninsula, near the northern tip of the island.

It is the only town in the state to be on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the site of the New Hampshire Turnpike, which was built in 1881. The U.N. World Heritage Site is also located in New Hampshire, and was once the location of the World War II Memorial, which is now a National Park. The National Park Service has a base station in the town. It has a population of 7,347, making it one of the most populated towns in the world.
