Southaven is a city in DeSoto County, Mississippi, United States. The 2020 census reported a population of 54,648, making Southaven the third-largest city in Mississippi and the second most populous suburb of Memphis. The city's name derives from the fact that Southaven is located south of Whitehaven, a neighborhood in Memphis. In just 20 years, Southaven doubled its land area, while its population tripled. Southaven was the boyhood home of noted novelist John Grisham, who also practiced law there for almost a decade, and of singer and songwriter Cory Branan. The center of the city is approximately 14 miles (23 km) south of downtown Memphis and 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Memphis International Airport. In the late 2000s, an outlet mall was proposed for Southaven. Tanger Outlets Southaven began construction in January 2015 and opened in November 2015. The average high temperature in January is 92 °F (9 °C) in January and July. The driest month of the year is July, with an average of 49,400 mm of rain (1.68 inches) in that month. In 2010, the city's population was 48,000, making it the third most populous city in the state of Mississippi. In 2011, the population was 52,000. The U.S. Census Bureau says Southaven has a total area of 41.5 square miles (107.6 km²), of which 41.2 square miles. (106.8 km²) is land and 0.7 km², or 0.68%, is water.

History

Southaven began as a village when Memphis homebuilder Kemmons Wilson (founder of Holiday Inn) wished to develop a few residential subdivisions. In just 20 years, Southaven doubled its land area, while its population tripled. The construction of Interstate 55 through Southaven in the 1970s helped to promote growth and make for easier access to the city from Memphis, Jackson, St. Louis, and Chicago. In the late 2000s, an outlet mall was proposed for Southaven. Tanger Outlets Southaven began construction in January 2015 and opened in November 2015. Southaven was the boyhood home of noted novelist John Grisham, who also practiced law there for almost a decade, and of singer and songwriter Cory Branan. The city continues to see large amounts of air traffic from Memphis International Airport, as flight paths to both northsouth runways lead directly over the city. In November 2006, Baptist DeSoto opened an eleven-story hospital tower that added 140 beds to the facility, allowing it to offer all private rooms. In October 2007 saw the opening of Southaven's first large-scale shopping mall, which is located just south of Goodman Road between I-55/I-69 and Airways Boulevard. The mall is open-air with various stores and restaurants, including J.C. Penney, Dillard's, Gordmans, Sportsman's Warehouse, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. No fatalities were reported in Southaven on February 5, 2008, when an EF-2 tornado touched down during the Super Tuesday tornado outbreak.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Southaven has a total area of 41.5 square miles (107.6 km²) The city is located 14 miles (23 km) south of downtown Memphis and 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Memphis International Airport. Southaven experiences a humid subtropical climate, with average annual precipitation of nearly 55 inches (1,400 mm) April is the wettest month of the year, and August the driest. The average high temperature is 49 °F (9 °C) in January and 92 °C (33 °F) in July. The city's average annual rainfall is nearly 55 inches (1.400 mm) Southaven is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town. It is located in the Shelby County area, which is the second-largest county in the state after Shelby County, Tennessee. The population of Southaven was 2,071 in 2010. The largest city in the county is Memphis, Tennessee, with 2,816 people. The most populous city in Southaven, Tennessee is Shelbyville, with 1,715 people. It also has the third-largest population in the United States, after Memphis and Shelby County. The total area is 41.2 square miles, of which 0.68% is land and 0.3% is water.

As of the 2020 U.S. Census, there were 54,648 people, 19,735 households, and 14,073 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 71.0% White, 22.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 3.1% Pacific Islander, and Hispanic or Latino, 5.0%. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.16. The city's median income was $46,691, and the median income for a family was $52,333. The per capita income for the city is $20,759. About 5.3%. of families and 6.7%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2%. of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over. The median age was 34 years, with 30.8%. under the age of 20, 13.5% from 20 to 30, 15.8 from 30 to 40, 13,8% from 40 to 50, 11.1%. from 50 to 60, and14.9% who were 60 years of age or older. The average age of the resident was 34.8 years. The population density was 1,499.9 inhabitants per square mile (579.1/km²). There were 19,101 housing units at an average density of 339.3 per squaremile (131.0/km 2).

Attractions

Snowden Grove Park and Southaven Arena are among Southaven's attractions. The town is also home to a number of shopping and entertainment options. Southaven is home to the Southaven Mall, a shopping mall, a movie theater and a bowling alley. The Southaven River runs through the town, which is about 20 miles from the city's downtown area. The city also has a zoo, a park, a theater and an amphitheater.

Sports

The Memphis Grizzlies operate their NBA G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle, at the Landers Center in Southaven. Southaven's Snowden Grove Baseball Park hosts the annual Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series. From 2000 to 2018, Southaven hosted the Mississippi RiverKings in the Central Hockey League and the Southern Professional Hockey League. The team relocated from Memphis prior to the 200001 season and was the main tenant of the Lander's Center for most of their time in the city. The Mississippi River Kings are now a member of the American Hockey League, having moved to Southaven from Memphis in 2010. The RiverKings are currently playing their first season in the AHL, having relocated from the CHL in 2009. They are currently in their second season, having previously played their first two seasons in the SPCL. They play their home games at the Landers Center, which was built in the 1970s and 1980s. The RiverKings are currently playing in the CPL's Southern Division, which is made up of the Mississippi River Kings and the Shelby River Kings. They also play in the American Hockey League, where they are part of the Central League and the Southern Pro League. They have also played in the National Hockey League's Southern Division. The riverKings have played in Southaven since 2000, and are currently playing their home games in the Southaven Sports Arena.

Education

The City of Southaven is served by the DeSoto County School District. The city is home to the University of Mississippi and the Northwest Mississippi Community College. The Southaven High School is the largest high school in the city. Southaven's public elementary schools are Greenbrook Elementary and Hope Sullivan Elementary. The Red Heart School (of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jackson) is a private school in Southaven. The City's public secondary schools are Southaven Intermediate and Southaven Middle School. The town's public high school is Southaven Central High School. It is also home to a public middle school and a public elementary school. The school district also has a public primary school. It has a private Christian school, the Church of God at Southaven Christian Academy, and a private private school, Northpoint Christian School. There are no public colleges or universities in the town. The state of Mississippi does not have a public college or university in the Southaven area. It does, however, have a community college in the nearby town of Desoto. It also has an elementary and middle school in Desoto, Mississippi, which is part of the state's Southaven-DeSoto School District, which has a high school and middle and high school. There is also a private high school, Southaven Junior High, and an elementary school, which are all in the same district. The high school's middle school is called Southaven Senior High. The elementary school is named Southaven Elementary and the primary school is known as Greenbrook.
