Englewood

The City of Englewood is a home rule municipality located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The town population was 33,659 at the 2020 United States Census. The city is a full-service city with its own, independent park, library, and public works systems. It provides snowplow service to neighboring municipalities and water to a large portion of the metro area. It is located at 39°3849N 104°5931W (39.646837, -104.991986) and is 5,371 feet (1,637 m) above sea level, higher than Denver. At the 2020 U.S. Census, the town had a total area of 4,257 acres (17.229 km²), including 56 acres (0.227 km²) of water. It has a climate very similar to that of Denver, but is slightly milder and more stable due to the city's location in a very low part of the South Platte River valley. Winds are very sparse throughout the city, having a very cold, cold, semiarid climate. The Köppen climate classification labels the city as semi-arid on climate maps. In 2004, the city opened the Pirates Cove water park as part of a multimillion-dollar improvement package for the city parks system. In 1965, City Park was sold to make way for Cinderella City, the largest mall west of the Mississippi River and one of the largest in the world when it opened in 1968.

History

Englewood is the primary city name, but also Cherry Hills, Cherry Hills Village, Cherry Hl Vlg are acceptable city names or spellings. Englewood is a full-service city with its own, independent park, library, and public works systems. It provides snowplow service to neighboring municipalities and water to a large portion of the metro area. In 2004, Englewood opened the Pirates Cove water park as part of a multimillion-dollar improvement package for the city parks system. In 1965, City Park was sold to make way for Cinderella City, the largest mall west of the Mississippi River and one of the largest in the world when it opened in 1968. In 2000, the RTD completed its southwest light-rail corridor in 2000, and established passenger rail transit in Englwood. The city was incorporated in 1903, but Skerritt was edged out by J.C. Jones as the first city mayor. In 1948, 2,500 acres (1,000 ha) on the Platte Canyon were purchased, and soon McLellan Reservoir was created. Soon after, the city embarked on a huge building boom; most of the city was in fact built up by 1960. The city demolished the defunct City Park in 1965, to make room for a new, transit-oriented development that would also contain a new Civic Center, library and the relocated city hall. In 2008, a new water park was opened at Pirates Cove, along with many improvements to the South Platte River trail system and the Engleton Recreation Center, originally constructed in 1975. In 2010, the first public library was opened in the city, soon to be named the Herald.

It is located in the Denver Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the cities of Denver and Elkhart, as well as the towns of Platte City and Pawnee. It has an area of 17.229km², which is the third largest city in the state after Denver and Pueblo. The population is 3,716, with a population growth rate of 1.7% in the last decade. The area has a temperature of 0.7°C (1.0°F) and a rainfall of 2.2 inches (6.4 mm) per year. The climate is very milder than Denver's, but more stable.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, 31,727 people, 14,392 households, and 7,469 families were residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 87.8% White, 1.5% African American, 2.9% Asian, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 13% of the population. The city's median income was $38,943, and for a family was $47,290. In the city, the age distribution was 20.3% under 18, 9.6%) from 18 to 24, 35.9%) from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 98.1 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males. The per capita income for the city is $20,904. Government and infrastructure

Central Englewood can be roughly divided into quadrants, divided by Hampden Avenue and Broadway. The northwest is the oldest section of the city, containing the new City Center, downtown, and housing stock dating to the 1910s. The southeast section is almost purely residential, and is newer than the north and southwest sides. The Hampden Hills neighborhood hosts one of the largest conglomeration of apartment complexes in the metro area. The Civic Center is located in the only remaining portion of the Cinderella City Mall. The Federal Correctional Institution,Englewood, is named after the city but is in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado. The city is home to Swedish Medical Center and Craig Hospital, a top-10, nationally ranked rehabilitation hospital for spinal cord and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. It is also home to Belleview Park, its largest park, and a small reservoir. The Cherrelyn Horse Car can be viewed in front of the library. It extends southeast to the Highline Canal, and southwest past Federal Blvd. approaching the town of Bow Mar. It also features some large annexed areas, such as the northwest annex that extends to Evans Avenue in Denver, which is chiefly manufacturing and industry. There are computers for public use, as well as printers and copiers. The library also has a small section on Colorado and Englwood history, a microfiche collection, and an archive of local history. It contains the Engle Wood Public Library, The Museum of Outdoor Arts, and all city departments, including the courts.

Education

Englewood is served by the Englewood Public Schools, a district with two high schools. Small parts of the city are served by Littleton Public Schools and the Sheridan Public Schools. The city is also home to a number of private schools, including the Saint Louis School, a large Catholic K-12 institution. The Denver Seminary, an evangelical graduate-level religious school that has since relocated to Littleton, is also located in the city. Humanex Academy, a private, alternative middle and high school for students who have learning disabilities and emotional and behavior disorders, is based in the town. The former seminary site has been redeveloped into residential apartments and retail, and is now a retail and residential complex. The school district also has four elementary schools: Bishop, Clayton, Charles Hay, and Cherrelyn. Some of neighboring Cherry Hills Village is within the school district, as well as parts of Littleton and Sheridan. The district has two middle schools and two elementary schools. The high school district has four high schools and one middle school and one elementary school. It also has a middle and elementary school that serves students in grades K-8. It is also the location of a private alternative high school, Humanex Academics, which serves students with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, and other disabilities. The public high school has two high school schools, EngleWood High and Colorado's Finest High School Of Choice. The middle school has a high school/middle school hybrid called Engle Wood Middle School/Middle School.

Economy

Business process outsourcing company TTEC is based in Englewood. The city's 2017 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report lists TTEC as one of the top employers in the city. According to the report, the city's top employers are: businesses, technology, finance, and health care. The top job creator in the town is a business process outsourcing firm called TTEC, which was founded in 1998. The town's unemployment rate is at 3.7 percent, the lowest in the state. The unemployment rate for women is at 2.9 percent, according to the city report. The highest rate for men is 3.8 percent, and the lowest rate is 2.6 percent for women, the report says.
